Passing of our Longtime Board Member, Dr. Bony Fields Barrineau
The Phoenix House of Tuscaloosa remains committed to its mission of transforming lives and providing comprehensive support for individuals recovering from substance abuse.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our longtime Board Member, Dr. Bony Fields Barrineau. Bony was a beloved figure who cherished Jesus Christ, life, people, his family, and was a prominent leader in the Tuscaloosa Recovery Community. For many years, he led peer groups weekly at the Phoenix House and was a friend to many.
Dr. Barrineau was not only an Orthopedic Surgeon but also a compassionate and understanding one, especially to those apprehensive about medical procedures. A true southern gentleman, he never met a stranger and made a point to connect with everyone he encountered. Whether at lunch or anywhere else, he would engage in conversation with every person, known or unknown. He was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. Music from past decades brought him immense joy, and he had a deep appreciation for antiques, saving relics, and constructing new things from old. His character was completed with a twinkle in his eye that could only be compared to the magic of Santa Claus.
Bony was a dedicated leader in the Recovery Community throughout West Alabama. He understood firsthand the challenges of overcoming substance abuse disorder and the daily commitment required for sobriety. As a sponsor, mentor, and honest friend, he supported many individuals affected by Substance Abuse Disorder. His role as a longtime member of the Phoenix House Board of Directors was instrumental. Phoenix House is the only State of Alabama Certified Transitional Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program in West Alabama serving both men and women. Bony’s leadership in peer groups and his personal meetings with clients struggling with addiction issues provided essential guidance, mentorship, and spiritual support.
